Morpeth is a mixed 11-16 comprehensive school situated in Bethnal Green. The school is designated as an eight form entry institution for 1200 students, including 80+ Special Educational Needs (SEN) pupils. Its specialism is visual and the performing arts. The development should place the school in a position to open its doors to the community and pupils, improving provision for SEN pupils and developing facilities for 16-19 year olds. Since September 2009, the school changed its status to become an 11-19 school as well as providing accommodation for adult community use under the development scheme.
The programme is a new build of 6,245m2 built in two phases. The building consisits of 3 sections varying between 1, 2 and 3 storey buildings. The new build consists of flexible teaching spaces, a large flexible community area, a table tennis facility funded separately from the BSF envelope, sports facilities, an enhanced music department, a large SEN base and a pastoral hub.
The north block is now obsolete except for the plant room area serving existing and new buildings. The external areas are remodelled to provide different types of spaces in the proposed internal courtyard.
