Project Description Morpeth

Artist's Impression

Morpeth is a mixed 11-16 comprehensive school situated in Bethnal Green. The school is designated as an 8 form entry institution for 1200 students, including 80+ SEN pupils. Its specialism is both the visual and the performing arts. The coming development, within the BSF programme, will ideally place the school in a position to open wide its doors to the community and pupils, improving provision for SEN pupils and developing of facilities for 16-19.

Since September 2009, the school indeed changed its status to become an 11-19 school, part of the Cambridge Heath Sixth Form Federation and its pleasant campus, with a mixture of new buildings and refurbished ones, is also providing accommodation for adult community use, The Globetown Learning Community and intends to become a training school.

Project Description

The project is composed of new and retained buildings for a total of 7,019sqm (including 1,030sqm of circulation and 125sqm of storage in the new buildings). They will be built or refurbished in two phases between Summer 2010 until Summer 2012.

The new buildings are composed of 3 sections varying between 2 and 3 storey buildings. The final campus will represent 2 hectares. The new build consists of flexible teaching space, sports facilities and an enhanced music department, a large SEN base and a pastoral hub to cater for the increasing number of pupils.

It also include a large flexible community space and a table tennis facility funded separately from the BSF envelope sports facilities which both represent 14% of the new build area. The north block is demolished as now obsolete, except the plant room area serving existing and proposed new buildings. The other existing buildings are retained as existing (only works to refurbish ICT capability).

The external areas are remodelled to provide different types of spaces in the proposed internal courtyard (2,291sqm of soft informal social; 5,489sqm of hard informal social; two new MUGA pitches of 1,077sqm – 8% of the final total external area - and an Ecology/Habitat area of 1,163sqm). The refurbishment and development of Morpeth School campus has been thought in the aim to reduce the car parking and increase the cycle parking, increase the permeable external surfaces and provide new communities and shared facilities as social and economically sustainable measures.

The key innovative and low-impact design features of the building are the exposed thermal mass, the solar hot water and the external shading devices.
